Hiking journal #003: Wodi Wodi Walking Track

The Wodi Wodi walking track is a scenic 2 hour track south of Sydney just before Wollongong. It is a relatively popular walk with the locals in the area and can get a bit busy on the weekends. The hike begins with an incline which might be difficult for some, but most people should be able to complete the trail in full.


 

Getting to this trail is pretty easy. I always start this trail from the Stanwell Park station parking. To get to the trailhead you have to walk through the underpass of the train station, up the stairs and veer right when you are on the platform. You will be introduced to a lush and green forest.

There are some very nice scenic spots on this trail. A small river crossing that leads to a nearby waterfall is surrounded by rocks you could easily stop and sit down on to have some lunch or a snack. Be careful in this section as this point is where it is the easiest to go off track. The waterfall section can lead eyes away from where the track continues so keep your eye out for the marker.

A side trip that can be attached to this track is walking up the Illawarra forest walk intersection to get on top of the escarpment for great views.



When you begin the descent towards the last section of the trail, you are presented with some great, however somewhat obstructed, views of the coast. On a nice sunny day, this is my favourite section of the hike.

Once the hike is finished, you will end up at Lawrence Hargrave drive and you will have to walk back to Stanwell Park station. It’s a short walk and quite pleasant as you pass by the coast.



I would highly recommend this hike for Sydneysiders as it is a close destination with easy spots to access the trail. Be prepared for slippery grounds and some uprooted trees along the path, so take care and time. It is not super popular in comparison to the trails offered in the Royal National Park so there will be more freedom. Bringing just a water bottle and a small snack for everyone will be sufficient for this trail.
